How to choose and place a digital hygrometer for a safe, cabinet or locked storage area without overbuying features you do not need.
The useful features are simple
Accuracy, readable min/max memory and a display you can check without rearranging the enclosure matter more than app integrations. A basic digital hygrometer can answer the main question: are conditions stable enough for storage?
Bluetooth or Wi-Fi can be useful when the enclosure is in a basement or detached room, but connectivity should not replace a local display and periodic manual checks.
Placement changes the reading
Avoid placing the sensor directly above an electric dehumidifier rod, beside a desiccant canister or against an exterior wall. Those locations can produce readings that are not representative of the whole enclosure.
Mid-height on a shelf or door organizer usually gives a more useful average. If the cabinet is very large, two inexpensive sensors at different heights can reveal whether conditions vary inside.
Calibration and sanity checks
Consumer humidity sensors can disagree by several percentage points. What matters most is trend consistency, but you can compare two units side by side for a day before trusting either one.
If a reading suddenly changes, first check battery level, sensor placement and room temperature before assuming there is a new moisture problem.
